Content ID for Beat Producers: How to Get Paid When Others Use Your Beats
Every day, thousands of YouTube videos are uploaded using beats that weren't properly licensed - or beats that were leased non-exclusively and are being used by multiple creators at once. Without Content ID, you get nothing from any of those videos.
What Is Content ID?
Content ID is a technology system built by YouTube that creates a digital fingerprint of every audio track registered with it. When a new video is uploaded to YouTube, the system automatically scans the audio against its database of registered content.
If it finds a match - your beat in someone else's video - it can:
Monetise
Run ads on the video and give you the revenue
Track
See the views without taking action
Block
Block the video from being viewed
For beat producers, monetisation is almost always the right choice. You're not trying to take down videos - you're trying to get paid from them.
Why Beat Producers Need Content ID
If you post type beats on YouTube, your music is almost certainly being used in other creators' videos without your permission. A beat with 500,000 views on your channel might be in another 1,000 videos on YouTube - tutorial content, vlogs, study streams, gaming content - each generating ad revenue from your music that currently goes to YouTube, not to you.
Without Content ID
- You earn nothing from unlicensed uses of your beats
- You have no visibility into how widely your music is being used
- You can't take action against creators commercially profiting from your beats without payment
With Content ID
- Every video using your beat becomes a revenue stream
- You see exactly where your music is being used and how many views those videos have
- You control what happens to videos that use your beats
How Content ID Works for Beat Producers
Beat Uploaded
Your beat is distributed through Dreamhause
Fingerprint Created
A unique audio fingerprint is generated and registered
Video Uses Beat
A YouTube video is uploaded containing your beat
Claim Triggered
Content ID automatically detects and claims the video
Revenue Flows to You
Ad revenue from the video is redirected to your account
This happens automatically. Once your beats are registered, you don't need to manually hunt down videos - the system does it for you.
Content ID and Beat Leases: What You Need to Know
This is where beat producers often get confused. If you sell non-exclusive leases, multiple artists can legitimately use the same beat. When those artists upload their songs to YouTube, Content ID will claim their videos - even though they have a valid license.
You need to be able to whitelist licensed users - releasing claims on videos from producers or artists who have paid for a lease.
A good Content ID setup for a beat producer includes:
- A whitelist system for clearing licensed users
- Clear language in your lease agreements about YouTube use
- A process for releasing claims when a buyer contacts you with their license
Dreamhause's Content ID setup is built around this model - understanding that beat producers have active lease catalogs and need the flexibility to manage claims correctly.
Content ID vs MCN: What's the Difference?
Content ID and MCN (Multi-Channel Network) are related but different:
Content ID
Specifically about claiming revenue from other people's videos that use your music.
MCN (Multi-Channel Network)
A partnership that covers your own YouTube channel - helping you earn higher ad revenue rates, get channel support, and manage Content ID across your network from a single system.
Many producers set up Content ID but miss the MCN side, leaving higher ad revenue rates on the table from their own channel. Dreamhause offers an MCN application as an optional add-on for producers whose channels qualify. Learn more about how Dreamhause works →
How to Get Content ID Set Up
Individual creators cannot apply for Content ID directly through YouTube - access is only granted to distributors, MCNs, and rights management companies who meet YouTube's eligibility requirements.
To get Content ID on your beats, you need to distribute through a service that has Content ID access and includes it for their clients.
